As the dark nights draw in and we spend more time indoors adjusting to the new way of working in this weird new world, digital skills, or a lack of them, feels more significant than ever. We’ve gone from meeting our friends in the pub, to meeting them online and sharing some of our most important milestones like birthdays, new babies and weddings on digital platforms to get closer to the people that matter the most.

This October GMCA has launched Digitober, a month of digital activity encouraging us to get online, become digital leaders and embrace technology to improve our lives and wellbeing.

Lunch and learns

As part of Digitober the Digital Learning team and friends at Stockport Council are running a really cool series of lunch and learns for colleagues, to share digital expertise, hints and tips as we all spend more and more time online. We will look at collaboration tools, how to design for people, Agile project management skills and how to get the best out of SharePoint and other tools.

For colleagues who wish to join us virtually, the first session is this Wednesday, looking at the best digital tools for collaboration online. It’s a great session if you want some new creative ideas to gather information and engage people in new ways to get the most out of your meetings. Stockport Council colleagues can book onto this session and explore others for the rest of the month.

Shift//Click

This November, in partnership with the GMCA Digital Fast Track Fund, Stockport Council are launching Shift//Click. This new 12-week course has been designed for college leavers to train to become developers.

The programme will be delivered online by MadLab and Stockport Council and will give participants an opportunity to build both technical skills, work readiness and interview for an entry level digital job at the end of the 12 weeks. We will very soon be recruiting participants with more information to follow, so keep your eye out for that one.

If you have any questions about Digitober, Shift//Click, or ideas for lunch and learn sessions you would love to see, please get in touch with the Digital Learning team.

There’s lots more to come in Digitober – look out for further updates on Digital Leaders Week and Get Online Week.
